Mayo Clinic's external funding team comprises financial counselors whose role is to provide financial navigation services and secure available copay and grant assistance programs for our patients.

Copay and grant assistance program funding is available for a wide array of conditions and uses. Our team focuses on funds that can help patients pay for their out-of-pocket expenses such as copays, coinsurance and deductibles, as well as for insurance premiums and related items. Some funding programs may even cover additional expenses such as travel and lodging.

Our team will reach out to you to obtain a Release of Information (ROI) form and explain the fund for which you might be eligible.

The type of patient assistance funding you might qualify for depends on your diagnoses, type of insurance and types of services you are receiving.

The team helps patients apply, facilitates the submission of your explanation of benefits and insurance claim summary copies to the approved program and follows up on payments to allow patients to focus on what matters most: Their care. Our team partners with your care team to ensure you are supported through the process and ensures a seamless patient assistance experience.

In 2023, we were able to help over 2,500 patients and secure over $24 million in approved funds. Copay and grant assistance program funding is available for a wide array of conditions and uses. Our team focuses on funds which can help patients pay for their out-of-pocket medical expenses caused by things like copays, coinsurance and deductibles, and also for things like insurance premiums.

Copay and grant assistance programs might even cover additional expenses like travel and lodging. The type of patient assistance funding you might qualify for depends upon your diagnoses, type of insurance, and types of services you are receiving.

I have Medicare, Medicare Advantage, or a military-sponsored plan like VA or Tricare

Medicare, Medicare advantage, or a military-sponsored plan like VA or Tricare. There are multiple grants that exist to help patients with this type of coverage for various services.

When grants become available, the Mayo Clinic's External Funding Team reaches out to patients who might qualify. We will facilitate the application process, which includes signing a Release of Information form, getting us permission to submit your claims and an explanation of benefits on your behalf. You are also welcome to research and apply for grants on your own.

Grant eligibility varies by disease fund and type of grant. In general, grants have multiple criteria that may include you're getting treatment for the disease named in the disease fund. Your treatment must be listed as a covered service for your disease fund. You have health insurance that covers your qualifying medication or product. Health insurance requirements vary by fund. Your income must fall within the range defined by the fund. You must reside and receive treatment in the United States or U.S. territories. U.S. citizenship is not required.

Once you receive a grant, Mayo Clinic can help you submit your healthcare claims explanation of benefits for reimbursement. Our team will then ensure that the funds from the grant are distributed against your current balances.

In 2023, mail clinic obtained more than $10,000,000 in approved grant funds for our patients. Your clinic might be able to help with free drug options for your infusion. For oral medications, the pharmacy that distributes your oral drugs can help you with the free drug program.

I have commercial insurance only

Commercial insurance Only. Commercially insured patients can access funds through copay assistance programs or grants. Copay assistance programs, also known as manufacturer assistance programs, are provided through pharmaceutical companies. They help insured patients afford expensive prescription drugs and/or clinica administered infusions by covering part or all of a members out of pocket medical expenses including their deductible, copay and/or co-insurance. Copay assistance programs are not the same thing as copay coupons.

The Mayo Clinic External Funding Team continuously searches for patients undergoing eligible treatment plans, might qualify for copay assistance programs for their infusions and or clinic administered injections. If a patient appears to meet program criteria, our team will reach out to you as the patient and ask if you're interested in applying. If you are, Mayo Clinic will facilitate the application process which includes signing a release of information form, giving us permission to submit your claims and explanation of benefits on your behalf. We will also follow up on payment, which then allows you to focus on what really matters, your care. You will only receive a statement once we have obtained the necessary funds from the program. We will keep you updated as we work through the process and are always available for questions.

Medicaid or a managed Medicaid product. Because Medicaid requires little to no insurance premium or out of pocket, traditional copay and grant assistance programs are limited. However, it is important to understand that if you end up getting other insurance or would like to investigate premium assistance for other insurance, we can still help.

Social work and patient navigation in the oncology space are typically able to better assist you.

Medicaid or a managed Medicaid product. Because Medicaid requires little to no insurance premium or out of pocket, traditional copay and grant assistance programs are limited. However, it is important to understand that if you end up getting other insurance or would like to investigate premium assistance for other insurance, we can still help.

In general, grants have multiple criteria:

  • You're getting treatment for the disease named in the disease fund.
  • Your treatment must be listed as a covered service for your disease fund.
  • You have health insurance that covers your qualifying medication or product. Note: Health insurance requirements vary by fund.
  • Your income must fall at or below the specified income level.
  • You must reside and receive treatment in the United States or U.S. territories. Note: U.S. citizenship is not required.

Note: Some grants are available to all insurance types, while some are limited to Medicare insurance types only.

Copay assistance programs

  • Copay assistance programs are funded by pharmaceutical companies to alleviate commercial insured patient out-of-pocket medical expenses associated with patients' infusions or clinic-administered medicines.
  • The only eligibility criteria for copay assistance programs is that the patient only have commercial insurance. There are no income limitations for copay assistance programs. Note: Medicare Advantage products are not considered commercial insurance for purposes of copay assistance programs.
  • Copay assistance programs cover only drug and administration fees. They will not cover other services, including radiology, labs and other diagnostics.
